The Firefox Pizza

August 1st, 2010 by Regnard Raquedan with View Comments

One of the good things about the last Mozilla Philippines Community meet-up is the enormous Firefox Pizza.

The brainchild of Mozilla Student Reps leaders Joell Lapitan and Jun Barrun, the 30-inch pizza was the highlight of the meeting. The pizza itself was a great treat and the community members actually felt the pizza was too awesome to eat. (Well, we eventually gobbled that awesome pizza).

If our research served us right, this is the very first Mozilla Firefox pizza. There have been plenty of Mozilla Firefox cakes baked before, but no pizzas.  We hope that this creation will serve inspiration to other Mozilla communities in the world.

Updates on the meet-up will be posted soon. :D

Techie.com.ph Features Mozilla Firefox Add-Ons

May 24th, 2010 by Regnard Raquedan with View Comments

Techie.com.ph, one of the Philippines’ top tech magazines, recently had a feature on Mozilla Firefox add-ons.

Entitled “10 unbelievably useful Firefox add-ons,” the feature focuses on add-ons with great utility for the power web user. The list is pretty good, as it includes faves like Adblock Plus, Easy YouTube Video Downloader, and Foxtab.

I’d like to add a couple more to the list:

  • TinEye Reverse Image Search – as the name implies, it searches based on an image as the starting point.
  • Speed Dial – I’ve found the Speed Dial feature in Opera and Chrome very useful. This add-on brings that feature to Firefox.

So there’s my additional set. Do check out the post at Techie.com.ph and check out those add-ons! :D

Mozilla Firefox 4 Plans Revealed

Firefox 4: fast, powerful and empowering

Mike Bletznet of Mozilla shared details on the upcoming Mozilla Firefox 4. He used the terms “fast, powerful, and empowering” to desribe the additional features and updates to one of the beloved browsers out there.
The goals for Firefox 4 are, as stated from the blog:
  • Fast: making Firefox super-duper fast
  • Powerful: enabling new open, standard Web technologies (HTML5 and beyond!),
  • Empowering: putting users in full control of their browser, data, and Web experience.
These features are quite relevant now, especially with HTML 5 gaining steam (*cough*Apple versus Adobe*cough*). Web Standards is always something Mozilla give focus on and Firefox 4′s attention to this is no surprise.
Another thing I’m looking forward to is the personal privacy features. Again, another hot topic with Facebook getting some heat, so this will be worth noting with Firefox 4′s release by the end of the year.

Mozilla Firefox Localization Webinar Highlights

March 21st, 2010 by Regnard Raquedan with View Comments

We had the Mozilla Firefox Localization to Filipino Webinar led by Seth Bindernagel of Mozilla yesterday morning and it was a great session.

Around eleven folks attended the first webinar to tackle Mozilla Firefox localization to Filipino. (Props to John, Kevin, Bob, Joell, Charmaine, Gian, Juned, Marvin, and other folks who made time for the webinar. if you were there, please let me know! :) )

Seth introduced a tool called Narro and it’s a web-based translation/localization tool developed by Alxandru Sasz. Seth showed us how to translate a couple of strings and showed us how to install language packs.

I just realized then that localization was a tricky thing. One phrase we were supposed to translate was “Manage Search Engines” which spurred a little discussion because there’s really no word that directly matches “manage” in Filipino. We agreed on “Pamahalaan ang mga Search Engine.”

One feedback: I hope Narro will be able to show the context of the strings to translate because in Filipino, there are different forms of verbs. Example, the string “Add Search Engine” by itself could mean to add a search engine right now, or an option add a search engine.

One learning I had is that we need some hard-core language and grammar folks to edit and make suggestions for un-awkward versions of English words.

In any case, this is a good first step for the community and we will follow this up with a translate-athon. :)

Seth has a nice blog post on the chronological events that happened during the webinar. :)

My Two Fave Mozilla Firefox 3.6 Features

January 22nd, 2010 by Regnard Raquedan with View Comments

Version 3.6 of Mozilla Firefox is out and it’s quite spiffy! Apart from the performance improvements and security tweaks, there are two sets of features I really like.

First is the official integration of Personas in Mozilla Firefox. It’s the best way to personalize your browser look because there are over 30,000 personas to choose from. Here’s a video to explain better:

The next set of features I really like is more geeky/techie: The improved integration of Web Fonts and inclusion CSS gradients. As a web designer, these features will really rock because this gives web folks the flexibility to make websites faster with web fonts and CSS instead of using images. These two represent the gradual integration of HTML 5 into the mainstream, if you ask me.

I’m sure there are other Mozilla Firefox 3.6 features people will rave about, but I already have my two faves.
