As I was recently appointed Localization Lead for the Firefox Aurora Tagalog translation efforts of the Mozilla Philippines Community. Two (02) weeks ago, I called for a MozCoffee event to all interested individuals to participate in the Tagalog Firefox project. The meeting was actually held this afternoon at McCafe Greenbelt 1; iced (or hot) mocha was on us!

Upon registration, each of the attendees received their coffee stub, which entitles them to a free hot or cold McCafe Mocha …

It was a very fruitful initial meeting, seeing old and new faces within the local IT circle. Most of them were not that aware of the localization (translation) efforts being made for Mozilla products, more particular: Firefox.

Thanks to the awesome people of McDonald’s Greenbelt 1! They managed to reserve a corner of their busy branch to accommodate the meeting attendees.

All those present during the meeting went home with some swags sent by Mozilla HQ (you are all awesome!).

We are now in the planning stage for the next meeting sometime middle of February this year. I’m thinking of having a hands-on type of walk-through about the Narro. Please do watch out for this event. Details will be posted in this blog soon.

If you want to be part of the Mozilla Philippines Localization Team, you may join our Facebook Group {tagalogfirefox@groups.facebook.com} and be sure to follow @TagalogFirefox in Twitter. Mabuhay!

Mozilla Camp Asia 2011

Everyone seemed to be busy on Christmas holidays, also the bad weather that hit the country,  hope everyone is now ready for some action in our Mozilla Community. Last year made a new mark in our mission that more volunteers are coming out but still a lot more things are needed to be accomplish. The Mozilla Reps program is one of the great things that make our volunteer efforts with ease in a structured manner.

We’re going to have the meet-up on January 13, 2011 at  Racks Restaurant Festival Supermall Alabang at 6pm-8pm. It’s a community event so we’ll just make a small contribution for the food and of course swags will be given away. The delegates from the Mozilla Asia Camp 2011 have a lot to share to you guys that will definitely inspire everyone to volunteer and be part of the community.

The Mozilla movement in the Philippines welcomes everyone to attend, especially college students. This is a limited slot only because of the small space of the venue so if you want to join the fun fill up this form.

Event Notes: Form Function & Class Web Design Conference 2011

September 20th, 2011 by Regnard Raquedan with 1 Comment »

Last September 10-11, 2011,the Mozilla Philippines Community supported the Philippine Web Designers Organization‘s flagship event– the <form>, function(), & .class(FFC) Web Design Conference.

The Mozilla Reps program was kind enough to send a huge box full of Mozilla swag as giveaways to the events attendees (as seen in this blog post). I think Mozilla and the Mozilla Reps got good exposure in the event, thanks to the focused audience (most were web developers/designers in their mid-20′s).

The event itself was filled with great topics. I gave two opening keynotes (Day 1 and Day 2) which I enjoyed writing. I has been a while since I read a speech I wrote– I’ve been doing mostly extemporaneous talks as of late.

There were lots of learnings, most notably in web standards as Rico Sta. Cruz had a workshop on HTML5 and CSS3. I just wished the attendees were given sufficient time to dabble on a small HTML5 project or CSS3 styling exercise. But other than that, it was web standards FTW.

It was really great that Mozilla is part of the FFC Web Design Conference to remind web designers and developers about the value of the Open Web and Web Standards.

Mozilla Wants You: Join Mozilla Reps!

June 23rd, 2011 by Regnard Raquedan with 1 Comment »

After the launch of the new Mozilla Firefox, it’s a good time to be a bigger part of the Mozilla universe.

Mozilla recently launched the Mozilla Reps program, a program designed to make it easy for passionate Mozillians, all over the world, to organize/attend Mozilla events and activities, to document and share your these activities with the broader community and of course, to inspire new contributors to join the project.

A wide range of new simple tools have been specifically designed for the program to make it very easy to:
  • request sponsorship and cool swag for local events
  • educate yourself on ways to represent Mozilla on your region
  • make your events discoverable through your personal member page and a dynamic Mozilla Rep events calendar
  • find and collaborate with other Mozilla Reps nearby
  • meet and work more closely with Mozilla teams across the entire project
While the Mozilla Reps program is open to all, becoming a Mozilla Rep involves a short application process to make sure those interested are motivated and ready to take on a leadership role within the Mozilla community.
If you feel up to the challenge and ready to take your participation in the Mozilla project to the next level, apply today to become a Mozilla Rep!
The process involves 3 simple steps:
  • Step 1: Fill out and submit the MozillaReps application form. A member of the Mozilla Reps advisory council will be in touch within 24 hours.
  • Step 2: If your application is approved, you’ll be invited to be interviewed by a member of the advisory council over IRC or IM that same week. The interview lasts about 15 minutes and you will be asked some simple questions about yourself, your experience contributing  to the Mozilla project and, of course, your motivation for becoming a  Mozilla Rep.
  • Step 3: If you are accepted after the interview, your Mozilla Rep mentor who will get you started and get you familiar with the tools at your disposal to start organizing events, requesting  budgets, swag, etc.

In the Philippines, this would be a great way to continue the great starts of new communities, such as Cagayan De Oro, Cebu, and Bukidnon. The Mozilla Reps program means that anyone can now officially have Mozilla events in their local community.

So what are you waiting for? Dive deeper into the Mozilla project and apply today!
