The training, which was held at Netopia Internet Café inside
the SM Mall of Asia last Saturday 14 April 2012, was conducted by Mozilla Philippines’ Lead Localizer for
the Tagalog Mozilla Firefox Project Robert “Bob” Reyes. Participants were given
a quick look on the basics of Narro – the primary web-based tool used for the
translation efforts. Some of the Mozilla Reps (ReMo) were also present to assist
during the hands-on training.

Some technical glitches haunted the start of the training:

(1) The venue doesn’t have an LCD Projector, thus I instructed
the in-house technician to install iTALC days
before the training – which he did. We tested, and it worked in the machines.
There was another group who used the venue before us; low and behold, when it
was our turn to use the function room, iTALC doesn’t want to work anymore! We
then resorted to TeamViewer.com – only the “teacher” will have to
install an app and his/her “students” will be able to see the shared desktop
screen from within a browser;

(2) Summer is almost at its peak here in the Philippines – the
airconditioning unit seems to be undercapacity.

(3) One good thing about Netopia, though: the Mozilla Firefox
installed in their PC units were up-to-date (version 11) – kudos!

Right after the training, the group headed to the iconic
Two E-Com Center within the SM Mall of Asia Complex
to meet with fellow Pinoy Mozillians for a MozCoffee
at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL). The café was
strategically located at the 4th Level veranda, with an awesome view of the
Manila Bay (sunset then followed by the weekend fireworks display). Thank you
very much to the awesome crew of CBTL for their warm hospitality and
cooperation!

By the way, did we mentioned that all attendees went home with
this limited edition Mozilla Communities tote bags with Mozilla swag items
inside (thanks a million to the people from the HQ for sending the items on

The new design has the standard “Mozilla” tab on the upper right hand corner. When the Mozilla tab is clicked, it expands to show links to Mozilla products, services,  information websites, and Call to Actions. The content of the Mozilla tab is the same for all websites using this theme.

These changes and the customizations were implemented by our resident web wrangler and WordPress guru, Joell Lapitan.

Kemuel Joseph Domanog and Kevin John Ventura, both Mozilla Reps from MPC, both students of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, have snatched the BEST I.T. THESIS AWARD for their work entitled, “UKnight: A Social Learning Management System for Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba”.

As of press time, Kemuel and Kevin are attending their graduation ceremony at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Calamba City.

The goals of the seminar-workshop was two-fold. First, it would explain how the attendees can add/edit content on Wikipedia. Among the hot topics of discussion was the method of referencing source material as well as use of other media, such as pictures. Secondly, attendees were exposed to using the Narro translation tool for the efforts of the local community to translate Firefox to Tagalog. The hope was that the Filipino community will help increase the number of successfully-translated strings currently at 22%.

Close to a hundred students and professionals attended the session, mostly from the Greater Manila Area. The event was sponsored by the College of Computer Studies, DLSU Manila.

Last January 2, 2011 a group of active I.T. students who are also a fans of Mozilla Firefox, conducted the 1st Mozilla Zamboanga Meetup. The Meetup was attended by students from different schools in Zamboanga City like STI College Zamboanga, Western Mindanao Cooperative College, Universidad De Zamboanga, and Western Mindanao State University. The first meetup was a success in getting to know the different persons behind the community who are willing to contribute to Mozilla.

The event was held in Letran – Calamba and started at exactly 12pm and ends at 1pm. The Speaker is our very own Mozilla Philippines Community Manager, Mr. Eusebio Barrun Jr. He Introduced Mozilla, its mission and how to contribute as a user to those who attended.

Mozilla ReMo guys also told them how they first started in Mozilla and their experiences being a Student Reps

Freebies are also given to those who joined! Kevin also taught them the “signature pose” of Mozilla Philippines!  So we welcome the new Student Reps!

A laptop computer, netbook or tablet PC is required to participate in the workshop. The internet services will be provided in the venue but if you got some handy USB broadband stick that would be a big help. We did our best to get sponsors for the lunch but still no luck. There are fast-food chains and restaurants to choose from near the university. Don’t worry guys we have some swags and cool raffle prizes to be given away.

Be sure to sign up here, there are two ticket option and make sure to print the ticket which will be presented during the event, any identification card can be handy for security purposes. Organizing event is not an easy task where time and resources is at stake.  In case you’ve sign up and can’t attend please let us know ahead of time so others in the waiting list can fill up your slot. Mozilla Philippines Community visited the Santa Rosa Campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines last Saturday, March 3, 2012.

This is first Campus Tours organized on its own by the community, and it was such a fun and refreshing experience. Jean Austin Rodriguez has an excellent blog post about the event on his blog.
