Mozilla Philippines will Join the MozCamp Asia 2011 in Malaysia

November 13th, 2011 by Eusebio Barrun Jr. with No Comments »

We are very pleased to be invited to this great event of Mozilla that will prepare us in the next year and beyond. The 2 day event is packed with activities that will cater to the Mozillians in Asia with the theme “Many Voices,One Mozilla” acknowledging the diversity of regional communities.

Just after the EU MozCamp 2011 in Berlin, Germany which is happening now, the Mozilla staff will be very busy again for the MozCamp Asia 2011  in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 19-20 that requires a lot of preparation. Excitement meeting in person other Mozillians whom I just know online like Mitchell Baker is a great opportunity to exchange ideas. Also learning other cultures and how Mozilla communities face the challenges of making the web better for the public benefit.

In response to the competition on browser market share here in the Philippines, this event would surely help us gain knowledge to be shared to the local community. We are always open for volunteers that are passionate in making a difference for a better web.

Mozilla Firefox 7 with Improved Memory Usage

September 29th, 2011 by Eusebio Barrun Jr. with 1 Comment »

Mozilla Firefox 7 released with a significant reduction of memory usage for faster browsing. In response to users demanding lower memory usage of Firefox, it now uses 20% to 30% less, and sometimes as much as 50% less according to Mozilla Hacks. Expect more memory usage improvements as Mozilla engineers started the effort MemShrink to the stability of Firefox.

I downloaded the latest desktop version on my machine and made some comparison before and after the upgrade, I did notice some improvements in the decrease of memory usage. One thing is the way it handle PDF files that has a blue loading status bar faster than the previous version in terms of page rendering. How was your browsing experience? please leave it in the comments.

This is my first post as the new community manager of Mozilla Philippines and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Regnard Raquedan for serving the community. Also with the guidance of Gen Kanai, Mary Colvig, and William Quiviger of Mozilla. I’m  looking forward to the success of Mozilla Philippines goals and objectives.

Are You Using Mozilla Firefox 6 Already?

August 18th, 2011 by Regnard Raquedan with 3 Comments »

If you don’t know that Mozilla Firefox 6 is out, then you should scoot on over to the download site and get this spiffy new release.

I’m sure some folks are wondering how Firefox, from version 3.6 at the start in 2011, almost doubles its version number in less than a year. The answer there is the rapid release cycle that was instituted this year. Heck, Mozilla Firefox 5 was released last June!

Folks using version 3.5 and 3.6 should definitely upgrade since there are huge performance boosts to Firefox with the latest version. The loading time of the browser is faster, as well as running web pages and scripts.

So if you want a better, open, and faster web, then download the new Mozilla Firefox!

New Mozilla Firefox is Out!

June 22nd, 2011 by Regnard Raquedan with No Comments »

Three months after the release of Mozilla Firefox 4, a new version of Mozilla Firefox is out!

The new version, Firefox 5, has incremental changes from the last one, but the most notable is the branding– succeeding Firefox releases will be dropping the version number from its branding. (But the version number can still be found in the “About Firefox” section.)

Why so soon? This new release is part of Mozilla’s new rapid release cycle (partially inspired by Google’s approach to churning out new versions of Google Chrome every so often). With this new rapid release cycle, we may see Firefox 7 by the end of the year.

Mozilla Firefox 4 Event in Bukidnon

May 10th, 2011 by Regnard Raquedan with 3 Comments »

A new local Mozilla community in Bukidnon had their Mozilla Firefox 4 event last month! :D

Organized by the folks at Bukidnon Online, the gathering was a great way to jumpstart the local activities and doubled as a blogger meetup. According to the organizers:

All of the participants also had a grand time surfing the web using the latest version of Firefox and they all pledged to share the good news about Firefox 4 with their family and friends

After the events in Cebu and Cagayan De Oro, I’m glad that the presence of the Mozilla Philippines Community is spreading south.

Mozilla Firefox 4 Event in Cebu

May 4th, 2011 by Regnard Raquedan with 1 Comment »

On the same day the Mozilla Firefox 4 event in Cagayan De Oro was held, the folks from Cebu had their own Mozilla Firefox 4 event.

Organized by Evanjohnn Mendoza, the new local community had a great kick-off with the Firefox 4 event. According to Evanjohnn:

The gathering of Webdevs and bloggers was successful with Ruffy Heredia as our primary speaker talking about Mozilla Firefox 4, its new features and some add ons which are very useful for the bloggers.

The Cebu community’s main objective was to create a community in Cebu for Mozilla Firefox and build an awareness of the new version of Mozilla Firefox. Evanjohnn feels that they established the sense of community and were able to come up with an idea.

The good thing about this event is that it spurred excitement over creating a community in Cebu:

We want to create a small community: The Mozilla Firefox Cebu Community. Ruffy Heredia, an avid user of the Mozilla Firefox browser (and previous versions), is willing to head the community. The objectives of the community is to build small forums, discussions and meet ups so that we can learn more about the different features of the Mozilla Firefox  browser at the same time build a collation of user experience data so that we can learn more what Browser users like to to do.

Wow, isn’t that awesome? Thanks to Firefox 4, there’s a new local community in the Philippines. :)
