MozillaPH Shifts Focus on Areas of Contribution for 2019

Over the last three (03) years, there has been a significant decline with the number of engagements and events hosted by the Mozilla Philippines Community (MozillaPH).

From a high of 59 events in 2016, the decline started in 2017 with just 14 events hosted, and last year, 2018 with just a measly 06. Being part of the leadership of MozillaPH, we can only blame the lack of time to plan for a more sustainable program to make engagements with our volunteers and contributors worthwhile. Another contributing factor to the decline is the fact that a number of Pinoy Mozilla Reps took time off from the program since 2017, while some moved to other countries already.

We also noticed that the leadership of MozillaPH is primarily concentrated in the island of Luzon, thus we created the very special position of a MozillaPH Regional Coordinator — we have two (02) as of today, and we aim in having more this year.

To streamline the operations of the MozilaPH Community, focus for the remainder of the year 2019 will shift on the following teams:

  • Community Building & Marketing
  • Creatives
  • Developers
  • Education, Online Privacy & Security
  • Internet Governance
  • Localization
  • Rust Programming
  • Student Ambassadors
  • Women & Mozilla + Kids (WoMoz+)

Community Building & Marketing

Since the expiration of the 24-month fixed term reign of the last Mozilla Philippines Community (MozillaPH) Community Manager in 2016, there has been nobody appointed as successor. As agreed upon by the current leadership of MozillaPH, Mozilla Reps Mentor & Tech Speaker Robert “Bob” Reyes shall assume responsibility in (re)building the organization, as well as being at the helm of marketing efforts locally. This particular team will focus on searching and training the next MozillaPH Regional Coordinators, with the aim of growing the grasp of the community to the entire country.

Creatives

Longtime Mozilla Rep and current MozillaPH Creatives Team Lead, Kemuel “Kim” Domanog will still lead the group. The MozillaPH Creatives Team is in-charged with providing the mutimedia assets needed by the community. With the new proposed setup, the MozillaPH Creatives Team will also handle the documentation and writing requirements of the community — taking care of the MozillaPhilippines.org blog and social media channels.

Developers

New blood comes into the leadership of the MozillaPH Developers Team. Bacolod-based Amiel Pastor and Luzon-based Kenneth Sungcaya will co-lead the team with the aim of preparing new and aspiring contributors, not just to Mozilla, but to the open source community.

Education, Online Privacy & Security

Our trusted Mozillians from Bacolod, Amiel Pastor and Lenuel Betita (MozillaPH Regional Coordinator) will spearhead the team management of Education, Online Privacy and Security in the community. The MozillaPH Education team was formerly known as the Webmaker team (locally), will focus on building a new breed of Pinoy Mozillians who will be up to the task of educating Pinoy netizens about netiquette, awareness to online privacy and security.

Internet Governance

Promise, MozillaPH will be actively participating in local Internet Governance discussions and issues. Mozilla Reps Mentor and Tech Speaker Robert “Bob” Reyes will be leading the MozillaPH Internet Governance team for the time being.

Localization

One of the firsts groups under the umbrella of MozillaPH as an organization is the Localization (L10n) team. Still being led by Bob, the MozillaPH L10n will be bolder and more aggressive this time in pushing to have Firefox Tagalog launched (finally) on Stable version (it is currently available in the Nightly channel).

Rust Programming

MozillaPH Regional Coordinator Romar Micabalo will co-lead the MozillaPH Rust Programming team together with Bob. Part of the initial plan was to reactivate the RustLE group in Cagayan de Oro City. Watch out for awesome announcements soon.

Student Ambassadors

The Firefox Student Ambassadors (FSA) Program was shelved more than two (02) years ago. But, the Mozilla Philippines community is willing to pilot another student ambassadorship program designed for the Philippine landscape. Perhaps, we can call it as MozillaPH Student Ambassadors Program, etc. FSA veteran Kemuel “Kim” Domanog will co-lead this team, together with Lenuel. Initially, the purpose of this team is to train and encourage students to represent Mozilla in their respective campuses. We are also hoping for this new team to act as some sort of a Junior Mozilla Reps or Junior MozillaPH Regional Coordinator type of program. More details as we shape the team in the coming weeks.

Women & Mozilla + Kids (WoMoz+)

Another program that was shelved years ago was WoMoz (Women and Mozilla). With the aim of bringing more women into tech, not just events and meetups, we are setting up a locally revived WoMoz team. The new team, to be led by FSA veteran and former Mozilla Rep Erika “Eka” Gatmaitan, will also include taking care of “kids”, hence the group will be called as WoMoz+.

All of the above are some of the current MozillaPH plans. We invite all of you to be part in (re)shaping the Mozilla Philippines community.
