MozillaPH Governance Structure Formalized with the MozillaPH Council Launch

The Mozilla Philippines Community (MozillaPH) has been operating as the local arm of the global non-profit Mozilla, makers of the Firefox web browser and other awesome web stuff, for more than a decade now. From 2009, MozillaPH had three (03) Community Managers: Regnard Raquedan, Eusebio “Jun” Barrun, Jr., and Faye Tandog.

When the last Community Manager left the organization a couple of years ago, the MozillaPH, as a community, has been operating under the guidance of existing Mozilla Reps, active Mozilla Reps Alumni, MozillaPH Regional Coordinators, and an awesome MozillaPH Core Members group.

During the last community planning/meeting, we saw the need to formally establish some sort of a governance structure for MozillaPH. At the same meeting, it was agreed upon by those present (majority of the current MozillaPH leadership) that we will adopt a council-type of governance structure for the community.

Mozilla is an open source project. Our community is structured as a virtual organization. Authority is primarily distributed to both volunteer and employed community members irrespective of employment affiliation as they show their ability through contributions to the project. The project also seeks to debias this system of distributing authority through active interventions that engage and encourage participation from diverse communities.

MozillaPH Governance Structure

Under the approved proposal, the Mozilla Philippines Community will follow a leadership structure composed of:

  • Active Mozilla Reps
  • Active Mozilla Reps Alumni
  • MozillaPH Regional Coordinators
  • MozillaPH Core Members

The MozillaPH Core Members group will be composed of seven (07) individuals, with at least one (01) being female at birth for diversity and inclusion. Members of this group will be duly elected by members of the MozillaPH community and will have voting rights as members of the MozillaPH Council.

Selection Process for the MozillaPH Core Members

In the coming days, we will announce the details for the nomination mechanics as part of the selection process for the individuals to form part of the MozillaPH Core Members group.
